Most bicycle accidents happen because the
cyclist is either not being attentive or is disregarding traffic
control devices. Just like driving a car, riding a bicycle
requires obedience to appropriate traffic laws and keeping
your bicycle properly maintained. It is when people do not
follow the rules, or ignore the broken part on the bike, that
they get hurt. And unlike having an accident in a car, the
chances of you getting seriously injured are a lot greater
if you have an accident while riding your bicycle.
Listed below are some steps to help make your cycling experience
more safe and enjoyable.
- ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!!!
- Be sure you are visible to motorists at all times, especially
at night. Wear reflective clothing/vests and use front and
rear battery-operated lights when it is dark. Equip your
bicycle with front and rear reflectors, along with reflectors
on the pedals and wheels.
- Keep you bike well maintained and know some basic bicycle
maintenance. Carry spare parts and tools in a repair kit
under the seat. You can even attach an air pump to your frame.
- Carry a water bottle with you and stay hydrated.
- The traffic laws and signals are the same for bicycles
as they are for cars; obey the traffic laws at all times.
- Stay to the right of the roadway and let cars go first.
Give drivers adequate warning of your intended movements
by using hand signals.
- Assume that motorists do not see you. Although you have
the right to a lane, don't assume others are paying attention.
- Ride in a buddy system in case you need someone to call
for help. When riding in a group, ride single-file, not
abreast.
- Try to stay off busy, narrow, and poorly lit streets.
- Keep both hands on the handlebars.
- Never grab hold of a car to go for a ride.
- Don't overload your bicycle.
- Discuss bicycle safety with your children.
- Never allow your children to ride at night.
